Music is very important to me.  I started collecting music (albums) as a teenager.  Soon I was doing monthly shopping for new music.   My collecting was not to get rare album covers or anything like that, I wanted all the music I could get my hands on.  Over time I ended up with over 1300 albums.  What type of music am I speaking of?  I like to say good music, but the music industry likes labels.  Two of my more favorite types of music (but not the only types I listen to are probably the two most criticized forms of music developed over the last 40+ years, “Progressive” rock and “Fusion”.  Both have been criticized for being too self indulgent and devoid of feeling.  Sometimes that’s true, but often it’s not .  Besides isn’t most music self-indulgent?  But why talk about music?  Listen to it.  Some of the highlights of my music collection:  Frank Zappa, Echolyn, Yes, Collage, Magenta, Big Big Train, Spocks Beard, Mostly Autumn, Animator, Deep Purple, Kevin Gilbert, Steelye Dan, Ozric Tentacles, Who, Happy the Man, Porcupine Tree, IQ, Todd Rundgren, Peter Banks, Santana, Steve Hackett, Chick Corea, Camel, Peter Gabriel, Gentle Giant, Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin, Jefferson Airplane/Starship (not “Starship”), Saga, XTC, Wayne Shorter, National Health, Spock’s Beard, Strawbs, Weather Report, Brand X, Spirit, Djam Karet, King Crimson, Miles Davis, Shadowfax, Stevie Wonder, Ambrosia, Herbie Hancock, Joe Jackson, Daryl Stuermer, Jade Warrior, Sigmund Snopek, Joe Walsh (he is a licensed amateur radio operator too) and many more (Notice a lot of older music in the list?   Where are the new adventurous musicians?   Maybe the record companies are too busy suing people to sign new acts which people might buy.).

Oh, about the music I create (or try to create using anything that makes a sound).  Some have called it Punk New Age.  I won’t say anything more.

Why aren’t people interested in recording anymore?  I don’t mean to steal music, to make music, make personalized “best of” collections, car and portable music, to experiment with sound, to create your own sounds, whatever.  Is it that it takes too much time?  Takes too much effort?  People just are not creative anymore?  What?

Alternative is not alternative when everyone is doing it.

I am confused.  DVD-Audio and SACD are trying to tell me I need their high bit-rate multi-channel high definition audio at the same time as MP3 (compressed audio) is supposed to be the greatest thing since sliced bread.  Sort of like having a 10 foot video projection screen and also wanting to watch TV on a cell phone...

For a great comment on the music industry worries on file sharing and copy protection see the Audio Revolution on-line mag here.

Interested in both old and new rock music on the radio?  Check out WXRT in Chicago 93.1 MHz.  For college radio check out WMSE in Milwaukee (from the Milwaukee School Of Engineering – I went there) 91.7 MHz.  By the way they must be doing something right, XRT has been around for over 50 years, MSE 35

Want to buy independent/progressive/re-issue music.  Check out the Artist Shop.  Great selection and service.  Also for Progressive music from around the world try Syn-Phonic.
